Put the Money Where the Eye Isn’t

Have you ever watched a movie and saw a car that made you think, “That’s a car I’d like to buy?” That was likely the point, the prominent placement in the movie a ploy to make you remember that product after you’re done watching. Priming, or publicizing, the placement through advertisements is another way that marketers highlight those prominent placements.

It's going to be their contract, their terms of service….You read your contract with them, it says there’s a disclaimer of warranties. It says we are providing our services as is. That’s worse than most products that you buy, where you have a 30-day warranty.”

Charles Ticho (EE ’48) shared his memories of Illinois Tech during his time on campus from 1945–48 following his service in the United States Navy in World War II. Among the memories that Ticho shared was one involving Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the longtime head of what is now the university’s College of Architecture.

On Campus Roundup

One year after the re-opening of the fully renovated George J. Kacek Hall, another Modernist residence hall designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is once again open for business. Cunningham Hall opened to students at the beginning of the fall 2021 semester, with a design mirroring that of the redesigned Kacek Hall. The building features six residential floors in a pod-style configuration, with student rooms pinwheeling around central study and social lounge areas, and another two floors that are in an apartment-style configuration.

Graduates Join 152 Years of Academic History

Nearly 2,000 strong—undergraduates and graduate students from every college and institute comprising Illinois Institute of Technology—moved their tassels to the left in spirit as they became members of the Class of 2021 at the 152nd Commencement Ceremony, held virtually on May 15. Alan W. Cramb, in his final Commencement as Illinois Tech president, and Peter Kilpatrick, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, awarded the degrees in a pre-recorded event from the Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship.

A Circuitous Journey

As a kid, Andy de Fonseca (AE 3rd Year) brought her telescope to school as a prop for picture day. But without high marks in her high school science classes, de Fonseca felt like space could only ever be a hobby for her. Instead, she pursued other interests, getting degrees in theater, cinematography, and history. De Fonseca worked in marketing and as a photographer, and she even published a science fiction novel with real scientific theories woven into a fantastical world.

The Rice Stuff

Yuta Katsuyama (M.Des.+M.B.A. Candidate) saw a problem—the lack of the Japanese staple snack food onigiri, rice balls filled with meat and vegetables, in Chicago—that he thought he could solve with design. Through trial and error, and using the knowledge he gained in Institute of Design courses, Katsuyama found a solution: creating his own business, Onigiri Shuttle Kororin, which launched in July 2020.
